One of the earliest recorded uses of antler was in ancient Chinese Traditional Medicine, where they were ground up and used in tonics to treat various ailments.
During the Roman period, antlers were used for decorative as well as practical purposes, such as loop fasteners.
In the Medieval period buttons and beads appeared in Europe. With the use of candles, there came a need for candle holders, and antlers were used for that purpose as well. Before long, hand held candle holders lead to hanging candelabras. The modern antler chandelier is based upon these early candelabras.
From the Early Iron Age to the Middle Ages, some of the objects made from antler include practical items like needles, buckles, fasteners, and combs. Many of the ones existing today came from from the 9th to the 11th century, and were often found in Vikings settlements.
Native Americans used antlers to create a variety of weapons and tools such as handles for knives, spear points, and hide scrapers. Ceremonial and adornment items such as bracelets, hairpins, combs, and figurines were also common.
Antlers are naturally shed each year. This does not hurt the animal, and and these shed antlers are used to create modern antler art. Deer, elk, moose, and caribou are all examples of animals that produce antlers.
When it comes to choosing a piece of antler art, there are a few things to consider. If you are looking for something to add a bit of character to a room, choosing something appropriately sized to to fit the overall look and feel of the room is a good place to begin. If the room you are decorating is large enough, you can add some antler furniture or an antler chandelier with more mass that will not overwhelm the room.
When buying antler lighting, always make sure that the whole fixture is CSA and UL certified to comply with manufacturing codes and regulations for the USA, Canada, and Europe.
While antler art is often associated with the rustic decor of cabins and lodges, the modern antler chandelier and antler furniture in general are found in many upscale establishments throughout the world.
